Head Gardener

Kilver Court Gardens and Nursery form the backdrop to Kilver Court Designer Village and is situated in Shepton Mallet, Somerset. We are offering you an exciting opportunity to take on the challenge of leading the development of this exceptionally diverse but intimate 3.5 acre garden. With a history stretching back to the 19th century and its 50’s design by a Chelsea Gold Medal winner, the garden includes a unique variety of planting from rockery, herbaceous borders, parterre and kitchen gardens to our mill pond and waterway, all framed by the spectacular, 15m high Victorian Viaduct.  Featured on BBC Gardeners World ( https://youtu.be/whVW-NZ_cus ) and the RHS The Garden magazine, Kilver Court is an RHS Partner Garden.
As well as maintaining to a high standard all aspects of the gardens themselves, you will also be responsible for the external/planted areas surrounding the 5 acre Kilver Court site to the same high quality expected by our customers.

  • This role is hands on, varied, and will require passion and a creative flair backed up by sound practical knowledge and a willingness to be adaptable, flexible and with a ‘can do’ attitude. The role would be suited for an individual who is already a Head Gardener, or an experienced Senior Gardener looking to take the next step up. You will have one full time Garden Supervisor reporting to you but will also be in charge of a small team of volunteers (including the recruitment of others) who will help maintain not only the gardens, but also the landscaping and maintenance of the external retail areas. You will be part of the team buying and growing stock for our garden Nursery, and advising the nursery staff on plant care and maintenance.
  • A member of the RHS Partner Gardens Scheme, our gardens are open to customers throughout the year, therefore previous experience of working in a public garden and enjoying engaging with visitors and helping them to enjoy their visit is vital.  A knowledge of H & S and risk assessment are essential.
  • You will liaise with our Head Chef on the planting and supply needs of the two kitchen gardens which supply our restaurant, one at Kilver Court and one at our sister company, Sharpham Park.
  • Due to the nature of the site, access for machinery is limited so general garden management requires a physical approach.
  • As a member of the Kilver Court senior team, you will work closely with the Directors, attending site wide management meetings, managing a small budget, and drawing up and updating planting schedules, management plans and project works. With the Garden Supervisor, you will ensure adherence to the ongoing maintenance programme for all machinery, garden infrastructure and tools.

A driver’s license is essential, as is an RHS level 3 certificate in practical horticulture, or vocational equivalent. Remuneration will be dependent on experience.
