Gardens
During December, flowers in the garden are scarce. Mahonia, a shrub related to Berberis, is a worthy addition to a garden. One of the best is a Mahonia ‘Charity’, a hybrid having dark green leaflets and deep yellow scented flowers; blossoming from November to February. It will grow 2.5m – 3.0m high. After flowering, prune back each shoot to a bud below, often removing 30cm – 50cm long. Our shrub at Kilver Court was planted 30 years ago and, as well as normal pruning, has been cut back hard over a period of twenty-seven years (half one year – half the next).
Seasonal Tip: Keep Christmas trees outside for as long as possible. Cut 5cm off the base and place in water. Tree holders that have a water reservoir are best to keep your tree as fresh as possible, but remember to top up the water periodically.
